Modes

    On-device Mode

    Choose On-device Mode for private work without an internet connection. MATE clearly shows when the mode is active, and Settings guides you through the one-time setup.

    MATE Cloud Mode

    Choose MATE Cloud Mode when you want MATE's online features. The app always shows which mode you are using.

    Explanation details

    When additional explanation is available, MATE places it in a separate section that you can expand or collapse.

    Tailored organisation setup

    Organisations with specific privacy or deployment requirements can contact MATE Support to discuss a suitable setup.

    Green Impact

    Each finished answer can show an estimate for energy, water and CO2. The Green Impact view brings those estimates together over time.

    Web search, with its sources

    Switch the globe on and the answer is built from current web results. Numbered markers in the text open the page they came from. You choose the focus (Web, Academic, Discussions), how hard it should look (Speed, Balanced, Quality), and whether images and videos come along. Your settings persist between sessions.

    Expert Mode

    Use Expert Mode for an in-depth answer supported by current web sources. MATE keeps the research steps readable and marks points that deserve closer review.

    Custom Mates

    Build your own assistant: name, icon, instructions, tone, which capabilities it may use, its own conversation starters and reference files. Seven templates to start from, or blank, or a copy of one you already have. Saved Mates sit in the composer rail next to the paperclip. Archive the ones you stop using instead of deleting them.

    Translate, transcribe, tasks

    Android carries dedicated Translate, Transcribe and Tasks screens, with local reminders on the tasks. The web and Mac clients have Translate. On iPhone and iPad the same jobs run inside chat: a Translate Mate, a Transcription Mate, composer voice input, a create-task-from-chat popup, and a Translate with MATE Siri phrase.

    Shutter, palette, temporary chat (web, Mac)

    Press Cmd+. and the whole window frosts over, so the colleague walking past your desk in an open-plan office gets nothing. Esc or a click brings it back. Cmd+K opens a command palette to jump to any conversation or action. Temporary chat starts a conversation that is never written to the browser's storage, never appears in history and produces no Memory entries.

Where MATE runs, and what powers it

Two facts decide most of what the rest of this site can promise: whose hardware the work runs on, and where its electricity comes from.

Our own data centres

MATE is served from data centres Swisswise owns and operates. There is no hyperscaler underneath, which is what makes the processing location a commitment rather than a contract term someone else could revise at renewal.

Renewable, in full

Across the year, the electricity supplying those data centres is 100% renewable, roughly half hydro and half solar. That is the physical supply, not offsets bought after the fact to balance a bill.

And the request that needs none of it

On-device Mode handles supported work on your own device, so that request reaches no data centre at all. The lowest-energy path is the one that never leaves where it started.
